Mexican-American photographer Philip Montgomery is considered one of the defining voices in contemporary photojournalism in the United States. In his black-and-white series, he distills social, political and ecological conflicts into striking visual compositions.

PHOXXI – the temporary House of Photography at the Deichtorhallen Hamburg – now presents his first major institutional solo exhibition in Europe. For over a decade, Montgomery has documented social inequality, structural racism, natural disasters and political polarization. His photographs of the Black Lives Matter protests following the murder of George Floyd have become iconic, as have his series on the opioid crisis and the consequences of extreme weather events. His work appears regularly in The New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker and Vanity Fair.

The exhibition American Cycles brings together around 100 photographs from the past ten years, including well-known editorial commissions as well as previously unpublished works.

By linking individual life situations with broader societal dynamics, Montgomery creates a complex portrait of a nation in transition. His images depict protest movements, vulnerable everyday moments, religious communities, political margins and people directly affected by economic or ecological crises.

The exhibition invites viewers to read Montgomery’s photographs in the tension between documentary observation and artistic interpretation. In doing so, his work offers a precise perspective on the intersection where journalistic inquiry and artistic practice meet.
